The Japan market for data and AI infrastructure in 2026

This page shows where Japanese demand for data platforms, data integration and the data layer for generative AI comes from, who sells it in Japan now and which companies are preparing to enter. It is written for founders, revenue leaders and investors planning a Japan launch.

Why we publish this. We put this research together for companies planning to launch or grow in Japan. It is the groundwork we do before every Country Manager search, and every figure links to its source, most of them published only in Japanese.

Demand

Japanese demand comes from legacy replacement, generative AI projects and data residency

Most large Japanese firms still run old core systems. Generative AI projects need that data in a usable form, and many buyers want it kept in Japan.

About 80% still run legacy systems

IDC Japan's 2025 CIO survey (February 2026) found about 80% of firms with 100 or more employees using legacy systems. IT modernisation services reached ¥1.30 trillion in 2025, up 10.1%; ¥2.12 trillion is forecast for 2030. Fuji Chimera Research reported rising data integration and relational database demand in October 2026.

Generative AI spending depends on usable company data

IDC Japan puts AI spending at ¥1.34 trillion in 2024, up 56.5%, forecasting ¥4.19 trillion for 2029. It links AI agents' growth to better data, RAG (retrieval-augmented generation) and language-model orchestration. Snowflake Japan said in July 2026 that 78.4% of Japanese customers use its AI services.

Banks, energy firms and manufacturers are named buyers

Databricks' May 2026 customers: AEON, Toyota, Tokyo Gas, Kansai Electric Power Transmission and Distribution, Cosmo Energy, Mizuho, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and MUFG Bank. ClickHouse names Rakuten Group, LINE Yahoo, NEC and SmartNews. Mercari, V Point Marketing and Collabostyle were scheduled to discuss TiDB migrations and plans at PingCAP's 29 and 30 October 2026 event.

Many buyers want data held in Japan

BigQuery added Google Cloud Tokyo in April 2018 for local data storage. Snowflake added AWS Tokyo (February 2020), Azure Japan East (October 2021) and AWS Osaka (August 2022), and registered under ISMAP. Databricks was preparing a Japan region for Lakebase in May 2026. IDC Japan expects dedicated environments and sovereign clouds to grow.

Cloud and AI infrastructure budgets are still rising

IDC Japan put the public cloud services market at ¥4.49 trillion in 2025, up 20.3%, and forecasts ¥10.1 trillion in 2030. It expects AI infrastructure spending to reach ¥821 billion in 2026, up more than 18%. AWS said in January 2026 that it plans to invest US$15 billion in Japan through 2027.

Vendors are paying to train Japanese data users

ITR puts ETL and data preparation at ¥14.5 billion in FY2024, up 11.5%, with use spreading beyond data warehouse engineers. Databricks plans to train over 50,000 Japanese users over five years with Shiga, Kyushu and Kogakuin universities. Over 3,000 completed Snowflake's five-day course, started in April 2025.

Hiring

What this means for your first Japan hire

The two largest data platforms hired Japan heads from big US software firms, and newer database vendors often set up through a partner before naming a president.

  • Snowflake promoted from inside. Ryuji Ukita ran a sales division at Snowflake Japan from 2021 and was earlier a managing executive officer at Adobe, before he became President in August 2025 (Snowflake).
  • Databricks hired both Japan heads from Salesforce: Commerce Cloud executive officer 竹内賢佑 (Takeuchi) (ASCII.jp); then Toshifumi Sasa, with over ten years there and earlier roles at Infor Japan, SAP Ariba and J.D. Edwards (Databricks).
  • Teradata's Takeshi Osawa led Cloudera Japan (Mynavi); ClickHouse's Takeshi Kaneko led Nutanix Japan (ClickHouse). Confluent's first head, Masaki Katsumata (勝俣正起), came from Actifio (Confluent); its current Country Manager came from Rubrik (release).
  • ClickHouse formed its KK with Japan Cloud, November 2025, naming its president three months later (ClickHouse). SingleStore uses SIOS Technology, March 2026 (IT Leaders). Partners generate over 90% of Snowflake's Japan business (EnterpriseZine).
  • Databricks Japan planned to pass 100 staff in 2023 and had more than 200 by May 2026 (2023, 2026). EDB's Tokyo job board lists a Country Manager, a Senior Account Executive and a Sales Development Rep (job board).
  • Buyers include chief data and digital officers at large firms. AEON's Chief Data Officer and Tokyo Gas's Chief Digital Officer were quoted in Databricks' May 2026 Japan release (Databricks).

Questions

Common questions about this market in Japan

How big is the data and AI infrastructure market in Japan?

No Japanese research firm gives a total for this segment. ITR puts ETL and data preparation at ¥14.5 billion in FY2024, growing about 11% annually to FY2029. IDC Japan puts public cloud at ¥4.49 trillion in 2025, forecasting ¥10.1 trillion for 2030, and AI spending at ¥1.34 trillion in 2024, forecasting ¥4.19 trillion for 2029.

Is there a Japan market size for vector databases?

None of the IDC Japan, ITR or Fuji Chimera releases read for this page gives a Japan figure for vector databases. IDC Japan links the move from AI assistants to AI agents to better data and RAG, but gives no yen figure for the database layer.

Many buyers want data kept in Japan. Snowflake added AWS Tokyo in 2020 for these buyers, then Azure Japan East and AWS Osaka. BigQuery has run in Tokyo since 2018. Snowflake registered under ISMAP, the government cloud security scheme. Databricks was preparing a Japan region for Lakebase in May 2026.

Which data platform vendors already sell in Japan?

Snowflake, Databricks, Google Cloud, AWS, ClickHouse, Confluent, Elastic and Teradata all have Japanese entities and named Japan leaders. Japanese competitors include primeNumber (TROCCO) and Asteria, whose ASTERIA Warp has the top share of Japan's EAI/ESB market.

How fast is Databricks growing in Japan?

Databricks said its Japan business grew more than 100% year on year in February to April 2026 and that it had more than 200 staff in Japan. It is moving to a larger Tokyo office and plans to train more than 50,000 people in Japan over five years.

Who do data infrastructure companies hire first in Japan?

Snowflake and Databricks named Japan heads with large-company sales backgrounds from Adobe and Salesforce. ClickHouse set up its KK with Japan Cloud before naming a president three months later, and EDB is now hiring a Tokyo Country Manager alongside an account executive and a sales development rep.
